  • THE GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS SURE ARE GOLDEN, AREN'T THEY?

    Posted on December 29 2014

    via isportsweb.com

The Golden State Warriors are 24-5. Repeat, the Golden State Warriors are 24-5.

How are they doing it? With a point guard that's MVP worthy, a shooting guard who is just getting better every year and seems to have hit that next level needed to succeed, and a supporting cast that is either overachieving or just putting everything together at the right time.

What about Steve Kerr? How much has he impacted this squad? It depends on who you ask; Dennis Rodman doesn't seem to think Coach Kerr is doing anything. Some people agree, arguing that all Kerr has done is just come in and manage the lineups and substitutions, while allowing Steph Curry to play his game and it's translating into wins.  Funny thing is, the people who disagree with Rodman's assessment also argue that all Kerr has done is just come in and manage the lineups and substitutious, while allowing the team to play their game and it's translating into wins.

So what IS the Golden State Warriors' game?  A lot of ball movement on offense, playing through their talented bigs and using good spacing, keeping opposing teams guessing and struggling with matchups, and of course, the sharpshooting of their backcourt.  The defensive side of the ball has turned around the past few years.  Mark Jackson took this team from playing high tempo offense while sacrificing on the defensive side, to playing with just as much pride in stopping a ball as there is in scoring.

You also have the guys on the team who are buying in to everything.  Andre Iguodala case in point; former all star, two time all-defensive team, career averages of 14/6/5/2 spg and he's making no fuss about his role now which involves him coming off of the bench.  His numbers are a career low across the board, yet you don't hear any rumblings of anything negative coming out of that locker room.  Andrew Bogut; another guy averaging career low in points but his rebounding and stellar defense is a key contributor to the success the Warriors are having this season.

How can we forget about Draymond Green and Mareese Speights?  They have shown vast improvements across the board, and if you take analytic stats into account then Speights is having a monster year.  Per 36 minutes, Speights is putting up 25/11 and is sporting a PER of 21.7! Draymond Green showed everyone flashes last post-season of what he's capable of and has carried over that play to a starting gig at the SF spot.  He's produced admirably with 12/8/3 plus over a block and a steal per game.  I haven't even touched on Harrison Barnes, whom many felt was trade bait and was going to be used to upgrade the squad (K.Love?).

So was Dennis Rodman right? Is Steve Kerr just leeching off of the team and padding his coaching resume? It depends which side of the glass you're looking through.  Don't get me wrong, the talent is all there.  Sometimes the talent needs to be nudged ever so slightly in the right direction for everything to come together.  In that sense, Steve Kerr has perfected the art of nudging.

  • Q&A WITH DINOBROS - LOYAL FAN FEATURE

    Posted on December 26 2014

Welcome to our second edition of the Loyal Fan Feature!

We know that for every city, team, or player, there is a passionate loyal fan that has stories and amazing mementos to share. We find that their level of enthusiasm is incredibly contagious so we wanted to take this opportunity to find out more. Throughout the year, we plan on asking them to share with us a little about what or whom they’re loyal to.

If you're reading this and are a super fan that want to be featured, send us a note info@LOYALtoaTEE.com with a short description of yourself and what you want to share!

So without further ado, let’s get started. We came across these guys on Instagram and also checked out their unique podcasts on YouTube and felt there was genuine passion for the Toronto Raptors. We had to get to know them more...so:

    Meet...@DinoBros

    Hey, so who are you?

Greetings and Salutations Guys! We’re the Dinobros, a dynamic podcasting duo who have a deep love and fandom for the Toronto Raptors. Joe b00gey was born in Toronto, but raised on the mean streets of Ajax. After University, I moved back to Toronto to be closer to the pulse of the city and fulfill my calling as one of the Raptors faithful. Being a true die-hard Raptors fan is a long and trying pilgrimage, but all the pain and suffering has been worth it to experience the good times and the current run that the Raptors are on.   Deuce Deuce (DD) hails from the community of Richmond Hill. He is easily recognizable and known in his community as the guy who is always wearing Raptors or NBA gear. Deuce has been inspired and called to visit all of the NBA stadiums, and has begun taking on this lofty challenge. The Dinobros first met in University, and were brought together by their extreme NBA fandom, and strong opinions.   Numerous fistfights almost ensued when discussing the Vince or Colangelo eras.

When did you start becoming a loyal fan of the Toronto Raptors?

Deuce: I have been watching basketball since the Raptors came to town, because my Dad is also a huge NBA fan. I remember the birth of the team and the Stoudamire days, with the Mighty Mouse branding. I remember I used to check box scores in the newspaper a lot during the Vince Carter era - he made scoring and dunking look so easy, why couldn't everyone post up 20+ points? It was a simpler time, no twitter, no reddit - the news cycle was a lot slower. I had a lull in my devotion for a few years after Vince betrayed us, but one of my roommates in university was a really big basketball junkie, and he rekindled my devotion with some NBA2K and some timely winning on the part of Chris Bosh and Bryan Colangelo.

b00gey: I was very fortunate that my family has always been very active Toronto sports fans (all major Toronto franchises). I played on my elementary school basketball team, so when the Raptors were born in the inaugural season, I was the most excited kid ever. During that first year, I was lucky that my uncle took me to a game at the Skydome vs. the Orlando Magic. Seeing Shaq drop 30 on the Raptors was mind blowing, and I still sometimes flip through the program from that game. After that moment, I was hooked and have been a super hardcore fan since I was in high school.

What is your first memory of the Raptors?

Deuce: I distinctly remember Damon Stoudamire commercials with the Mighty Mouse theme song. It was catchy, and I was a kid, so I ate that up.

b00gey: I have this Toronto Raptors commemorative plaque, from the first season that I still hang and is a key fixture in my Raptors shrine.

Can you tell & show us what items you have collected over the years for this team?

Deuce: It was hard to start a collection as a kid, because you're broke and can't buy a bunch of stuff. Since we finished school and got jobs though, I've managed to start building a decent collection of memorabilia.

First and foremost, we finally fulfilled our dream and we are both season ticket holders. At times, food and shelter were both lower priorities after the Raptors in the needs hierarchy.

I'm also pretty proud of having been to all our home playoff games from last year, so I have all those T-shirts collected.

I've got two DeMar jerseys - one in our alternate black, and a signed all-star jersey. I've also got a small collection of general NBA jerseys - Kobe, Curry, KD, PG, Tony Parker. I love the Raps, but I have to respect the super stars.

One other collection I'm working on is the Raptor's Dance Pak Instagram accounts. I'm trying to follow all the individual dancers from the Pak on Instagram. It’s like Pokémon but way hotter.

b00gey: I have the program from the first Raptors NBA game at the Skydome vs the New Jersey. My goal is to one day get as many of the original roster to autograph the program, but I’m currently sitting at a total of zero autographs lol.

I’m not a huge memorabilia and collectibles guy. I’m more of a pain and suffering/emotional damage type of guy. Over the years, the Raptors have left many deep wounds and scars on my soul, but I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

What made you gravitate towards becoming a super fan of the team?

Deuce: I had always been a fan, but I feel like starting the podcast and spreading Raptors news and discussion has really taken me to that next level, I now live and breathe Raptors. The Raptors have always been an underdog team, but the “We the North” marketing campaign really embraced that and polarized the Canadian basketball fans. The Leafs didn't make the playoffs so Raptor fever was at an all-time high. Nothing has made me angrier than the lack of Raptors coverage and that was really the motivation to start the podcast and provide content to the hardcore and grassroots Raptor’s fans.

We wanted to start spreading our enthusiasm, not just for the product on the court, but also the going-ons around the organization, the city and the NBA in general. Honestly, we just started the Dinobros, not sure about anything other than our love for the Raptors. Its been a process, but we're learning and we've really started to take off. We appreciate our fans and all of the responses that we receive over social media.

b00gey: For me, being a super fan was never really an option, it was more of a destiny that needed to be fulfilled. I am a fan of all of the major sports and spend most of my time watching games, reading articles, and scouring the internet for news and information. I was an early adopter of NBA League Pass and it has really taken my fandom to a new level. Now that I have access to all of the NBA games, it is just UNREAL. Even when I am out and about, I’ll be watching games on mobile and oblivious to my surroundings. Not surprisingly(sadly?), my life revolves around the Raptors and it really dictates my schedule and free time. My family and friends often feel neglected and like they are playing second fiddle to the Raptors, but now that the Raptors are doing well my family and friends are much more supportive and everyone is super excited and pumped for the team this year, and asking questions etc.

Who have been your favourite players, past and present?

Deuce: I really like the current team with DeMar and Kyle, because they work hard and they have the team playing for each other.

I actually really like some of our role-players though, 3rd and 4th options. 3-and-D guys who go unappreciated in the greater league, but can play a big part of a team’s depth and chemistry.

    Mo-Pete - Gotta respect that most-games-played record.

Anthony Parker - Nothing really jumps out about his game, but he played smart and had an impact on that 2007/2008 play off run. Also, didn't know anything about the WNBA until I looked up his sister.

Doug Christie - Just a solid player in the early years of our budding franchise.

James Johnson is also climbing up this list, because he’s a savvy player, and a Black Belt. As someone who also likes to play basketball and has a black belt, I’m inspired.

b000gey: Of the current crop of players, my three favorites are definitely Kyle Lowry, JV and Psycho T. The heart and grit that Lowry plays with is undeniable and he leaves it all on the court. Jonas is my boy and I’ve been in his corner since day one. Watching his progress has been great, and I can’t wait until he takes that next step.

Some of my favourites from the past are Charles Oakley, Antonio Davis, Jerome “ The Junkyard Dog” Williams and Rafer “Skip 2 my Lou” Alston. I’ve watched every And1 mixtape probably 100 times. My wardrobe in those days consisted of purely Reebok Allen Iverson gear and Jordan apparel.

What is your favourite Raptors moment?

Deuce: This game didn't have any real significant meaning. It was just a few weeks into the 06-07 season. I had been out of the basketball loop a while but my room mates and I were watching the Raptors vs Sixers after just eating an insane amount of pizza (ahh, college).

Less than 24 seconds left in the game - I think we were down 2 points.

TJ ford dribbles around the perimeter to kill some time then tries to give it to bosh on the right elbow.

The pass gets tipped though, and Bosh has to scramble to save it from going out of bounds.

He recovers it, dribbles up to the three point line and drains a three with the defender in his face to win the game.

This was before Bosh was an accomplished 3pt shooter, so my roommates and I went nuts. Just a huge play with a bit of luck to bring us together.

b00gey: Maybe not my favourite moment, but the most impactful moment was when the Raptors lost game 7 in the Eastern Conference Semis to the Philadelphia 76ers. That has left a lasting impression on me and I’m just waiting for the day when we return there. Hopefully this season, but I dont want to jinx it.

What record will the Raptors end the 2014-15 regular season with?

    Deuce: 52-30

    b00gey: 55-27

  • Q&A - OUR FIRST LOYAL FAN FEATURE

    Posted on December 08 2014

Welcome to our first edition of the Loyal Fan Feature!

Our first feature is on a super fan of the Toronto Raptors. In fact, he runs an Instagram account under @TorontoRaptorsSuperFan, which is really self-explanatory.

    Meet...@TorontoRaptorsSuperFan

    Hey, so who are you?

Just a neighbourhood friendly Toronto Raptors fan from Whitby, Ontario.

When did you start becoming a loyal fan of the Toronto Raptors?

Considering I was born in ’93, it took me a while to understand and get more interested in the game. It was always the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Blue Jays for me growing up. When I started watching them and getting more into sports, it was during the Vince Carter and T Mac era. The energy they brought, game in and game out, made you want to watch every single game and not miss a single one because you didn't know what to expect from them. One game they could be doing the craziest dunks or a highlight reel alley-hoop play and next game they would hit a game winner. One thing about that era for the Toronto Raptors was they were and always will be an underrated and unpredictable team, still seeking the respect from around the league that they deserve.

What is your first memory of the Raptors?

My first memory of the Toronto Raptors is probably when Vince Carter participated in the Slam Dunk competition in 2000. The dunks he pulled off in the contest - I couldn't even believe my eyes, Never knew VC had some of those dunks even in his repertoire, whether it being the 360-windmill, the between the legs dunk, or even the cookie jar dunk. Ever since Vince won that contest, he put the Toronto Raptors on the map and the league took notice to this Toronto Raptors squad, and that same year they earned there first playoff berth.

Can you tell & show us what items you have collected over the years for this team?

Some of my most prized possessions which I have collected over the years include:

    • In 2004, Morris Peterson and Milt Palacio hosted a basketball event at Canada’s Wonderland. I was lucky enough to play bump with both of them and ended up making it into the finals against Morris Peterson. Sadly I lost but still put up a good fight especially considering how much younger I was. After the game, both players ended up signing a Raptors t-shirt I wore to the game. To this day that is still one of my most prized possessions.
    • Another one of my most prized possessions was from a basketball clinic called Bell Raptor Ball, organized by Toronto Raptors commentator Leo Rautins. They held a 3-point competition which I won and was given a signed Vince Carter basketball
    • I have a signed Jonas Valanciunas jersey. During last season’s all-star break, he decided to reach out to his fans and give a jersey to one of his fans that posts the best highlight of his. I posted one of his highlights on his page and he contacted me the next day saying that I won and he’d sign the jersey. A couple days after I received the jersey, I ran into Muggsy Bogues at the Eaton Centre. So I ended up getting JV and Muggsy Bogues autographs on the JV jersey.

    • One other prized possession I will share with you fans would be my signed Greivis Vasquez shirt. I was walking to work downtown Toronto one day and I saw a group of people playing basketball at Nathan Phillips Square. I had some time to spare so I joined in for a bit. I soon learned that Greivis Vasquez was going to be hosting a 3-point contest with fans promoting the 2015 Pan Am Games. After the contest, I had to opportunity to meet The General himself and ended up getting an autographed shirt, a picture with Greivis, and made it into his personal video that he uploaded to his Instagram account. It was definitely a day to remember.

What made you gravitate towards becoming a super fan of the team?

No matter what our team looks like and who we have on our roster, we will always be the underdog and always will have something to prove to the league. Before this season even started, all the analysts predicted the Raptors being third or lower in the Eastern Conference. Right now, we're 15-5 and have held the first place spot in the Eastern Conference for quite some time now and really proving that they can keep up with the best of them. Another reason is just by reminiscing on how they started off and no one knew about Toronto Raptors, they’ve really developed as an organization since that time.

Who have been your favourite players, past and present?

Past: Morris Peterson because the style I play is similar to his. I'm more of a shooter and Morris Peterson was an outstanding shooter, always enjoyed watching him shoot the ball, and even all the trick shots he could pull off in games were ridiculous.

Current: Lou Williams or Greivis Vasquez. I'm a big fan of Lou because of his pure jump shot. Also, love his ability to convert on jump shots while getting fouled is an incredible thing to see. I'm also a big fan of Greivis Vasquez because of his swagger and the energy he brings game in and game out. He knows what his role is, accepts it, and knows how to play within his abilities. These two players can always provide that spark off the bench if they ever need it, especially when both DeMar and Kyle’s game are off.

What is your favourite Raptors moment?

My all-time favourite Raptors moment was when Toronto was playing Washington in the Gilbert Arenas and Chris Bosh era during the 2005-06 season, The Raptors were down three with 3.8 seconds to go in the game, so they tried throwing the hail mary pass to Chris Bosh for a three but the pass gets intercepted by Washington’s Michael Ruffin. He tries throwing it away and gets deflected by Jose Calderon, which then falls right into Mo Pete’s hands. He launches off a 3-pointer and makes the shot to beat the buzzer…somehow he got off that shot with .5 seconds left on the clock.

What record will the Raptors end the 2014-15 regular season with?

    54-28

Any final words for our readers?

If you're looking for anything Raptors related, whether it be scores, stats, video coverage, news, or even pictures from the game, please give our page a follow (@TorontoRaptorsSuperFan). Also I just want to take the time out to thank all the readers who are reading my feature and also a huge thanks goes to LOYAL to a TEE for giving me this opportunity.

When I first saw your tees, I immediately fell in love with the designs. I had to get myself some being a Raptors super fan so I now have the The North Tee featuring Alvin Williams, Charles Oakley, Vince Carter, and Tracy McGrady and the ProveEm Tee featuring DeMar DeRozan & Kyle Lowry and of course, the 20 Years Anniversary Tee! Really appreciate what you’re doing for fans and giving them an option for fan gear that is both high quality and has fresh designs. Thanks and I can’t wait to see more releases from you all!

  • 20 YEARS TEE APPEARS ON THE HANGOUT

    Posted on December 04 2014

We had a very proud moment last week when our 20 Years Anniversary Tee appeared on one of our favorite shows The Hangout, which airs on NBA TV Canada on a weekly basis.

Here's some background on The Hangout:

"The Hangout, hosted by NBA TV Canada's Akil Augustine, is a weekly half-hour broadcast featuring sports experts, personalities and celebrities speaking on the hottest topics in basketball and culture. As Canada's only topical basketball TV show, it is a casual - on the couch - spirited talk show for the new generation of culturally savvy, social media sports fans."

With that said, this show is growing in popularity and continues to fuel the growth of basketball within the country. We were honored to have one of its host Duane Watson repping one of our most popular tees, celebrating the most memorable moments in the past 20 years for the team up in The North.

If you didn't catch it last week, they debated whether Toronto Raptors' offseason pickup Lou Williams is in contention as Sixth Man of the Year and expectations for the New York Knicks this season.

Stay tuned loyal fans - our tees may make a few more appearances throughout this season!
